The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has awarded $100,000 to Stockton for a Community Marine debris removal project "Derelict crab trap removal in the Mullica River–Great Bay Estuary (NJ): a sustainable, community-based effort engaging commercial crabbers, undergraduate / graduate marine science students, and NOAA national estuarine research reserve volunteers." The Pi is Dr. Mark Sullivan and the coPIs are Peter Straub and Steve Evert of Stockton and Melanie Reding of the Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve. The 2-year project is a community based effort including the researchers, commercial watermen, students and JCNERR volunteers. Some of the preliminary work for this project was done in Stockton classes (Marine debris/ghost traps).
